AIRLINE BAGGAGE
HANDLING WOES CONTINUE
Compared with a
decade ago, there's a greater chance now that you'll need to check a
bag when you fly, thanks to a plethora of new and often arcane
security rules. There's also a greater chance that your checked bag
will be "mishandled" -- an airline term for lost, damaged, delayed,
or pilfered luggage. (USA Today)

TRAVELERS TAXED BY
AIRLINE TICKET SALES
Air travel is
taxing in more ways than passengers imagine. Besides the long
security lines, overbooked flights and lost baggage, passengers are
paying a laundry list of taxes and charges often invisible even to
the most seasoned traveler. (AP)

TIPPING TIPS FOR TRAVELERS
When staying in
a hotel it's a good idea to know the appropriate amount to tip a
bellman who totes your luggage to your room, a housekeeper who
cleans up the crumbs from last night's room service meal and the
valet who rushes to get your rental car from the parking garage. (MSNBC.com)

TELEPHONE TIPS FOR EUROPE
Calling home from abroad can cost more than
your airfare. If you use the hotel phone, you'll be presented with
an exorbitant bill. If you rent an "international cell phone," you
will also spend a small fortune. U.S. phones with GSM service work
well overseas but, again, the price is steep. Does phoning home have
to be so expensive? No, it does not. (Charles Leocha on Tripso)

PHONE HOME
What's the worst thing about traveling? I
mean, besides the cost, the long lines, the pint-sized seats and the
jet-lag? For me, it's the time spent away from home. I am now a new
daddy and I can't stand to be away from home for more than a few
days. I keep worrying that my boy won't recognize me when I come
home. Well, I have a solution to long-distance communication. It's
called Skype, and it's easy -- and free. (James Wysong on Tripso)

THE RIGHT
TO RECLINE
To recline or not to recline, that is the
question. Sure, there's a button on your armrest that allows you to
recline your airplane seat, but should you? Will you end up in a
brawl with the passenger behind you? What is the etiquette here, and
what is the defense against an invasion of lap space? James Wysong
has some advice. (James Wysong on Tripso)

Progress is a
funny thing
Courtesy of David
Rowell, The Travel Insider
Progress is a funny thing, and
sometimes it seems that modern day security at an airport or other
restricted access facility isn't much better than it used to be 50
and more years ago. Here's a
1.6MB wmv movie clip
to remind us that security has never been completely perfect.
