American to charge $15 to check first bag, slash capacity
Citing soaring fuel prices, American Airlines has increased fees on a variety of services and plans to charge some passengers an extra $15 to check one piece of luggage. While consumers were quick to criticize the new policy, rival carriers said they may consider matching the fee. Additionally, American said it is planning to drastically cut capacity in the fourth quarter. (USA TODAY) Read the full article

4 tips for avoid new airline luggage fees
American Airlines’ decision to slap a $15 fee on the first checked bag — that’s right, the first checked bag — isn’t the airline industry’s first attempt to squeeze more money from passengers through a sneaky surcharge. And it won’t be its last. (MSNBC.com)

TSA may ease rule requiring laptops to be removed from cases
Kip Hawley, Transportation Security Administration chief, said a new policy is about to be adopted that would allow laptops to go through airport X-ray machines in certain types of cases. The move would ease the post-9/11 hassle of having to remove laptops from their cases at security checkpoints. "This is very doable, and we'll be in a position in a couple of months to say people who show up with these types of laptop cases will be able to put them though X-ray machines," Hawley said. Over the years, U.S. gradually boosts taxes on air fare
In 1972, the government received about 7% of the price of a domestic round-trip ticket through taxes and fees. Today, that figure has ballooned to 20%. "When the government decides to throw another tax on passengers, that is greatly hurting an already financially hurting industry," said David Castelveter, an industry representative. "We've long said that we are one of the most overtaxed industries, and we now are dealing with record-level fuel increases. The airline industry is in a worse financial situation than it was on 9/11." (CNNMoney.com)  Read the full article

Flight Tip
Always carry snacks: a short flight can become a long flight due to weather, air traffic, mechanical delays or for any reason.  Airlines don't offer food and some charge even for water (Spirit Airlines).  I always carry granola bars.  They become flattened in my laptop case but it's better than being hungry.  Also carry an empty plastic water bottle.  Fill it after you go though security.

Rental Car Tip
Check for damage before you leave the lot: it's a good idea to take pictures of your car with your cell phone camera.  If there is any damage, get a different car before you drive off the lot.
